Ely Choral Society in Vercelli7th June 2008Concert in Sant'Andrea's Ely Choral Society visited Vercelli from 6th to 8th June 2008.They sang in the basilica founded by Guala Bicchieri, the cardinal and papal legate who acted as Innocent III's and Honorius III's legate in England from 1216 to 1218. The basilca was built soon after the return of the cardinal from England, and thanks to the livings of St.Andrew's Chesterton, which Guala had received in England from King Henry III as a token of gratitude.Chesterton belonged and still belongs to the Diocese of Ely: this is the reason why Ely and Vercelli have recently signed a pact of friendship reviving the interest in the old links between the two cities. The mambers of the Choir came to Vercelli as cultural ambassadors. Their leaders, Mrs. Lis Every and Mr. Jonathan Rogers, decided to offer 500 Euros to the basilica, whose organ needs restoring. The members of Chesterton Cultural Society wish to put on records the huge debt of gratitude towards Ely Choral Society.Thank you for the visit and thank you for being our friends!!
